~ Neville F Murray ~
I have been a professional musician
[conga player] since 1972, with the first decade or so spent playing
in bands around the african/latin/caribbean circuit in London.
In 1982 I joined Jah Wobble's 'Invaders
of the Heart', and over the following sixteen years I toured the
world extensively. I recorded and played with many internationally
known musicians, including Prince, The Edge and Sinead O'Conner.
From the middle of the 1980's I have
increasingly earned my living from teaching and running workshops. I
teach mainly songs and rhythms from Africa,Latin America and the
Caribbean region. I am employed by a variety of
organisations from main-stream and special needs schools to colleges, hospitals and individuals.
I was a tutor at Londons Guildhall
School of Music and Drama's Performance and
Communication Skills postgraduate course, and also for the same
amount of time, at the University of East Anglia's Department of Education as a visiting
tutor teaching trainee music teachers.
As well as
teaching I also run two of my own bands, and in September 2003 I am
starting a Mmus degree in ethnomusicology at London University's School of
Oriental and African Studies.
